Health Checks

Use RunLater to ping your services on a schedule and ensure they're responding correctly.

Why Use RunLater for Health Checks?

  • Simple setup – no monitoring tool required
  • Full response logging for debugging
  • Automatic retries catch transient failures
  • Combine with alerting services

Basic Health Check

  1. Create a new request in RunLater
  2. Enter your health check endpoint (e.g., /api/health)
  3. Select GET method
  4. Schedule: */5 * * * * (every 5 minutes)

Combined with Alerting

Chain RunLater with an alerting service:

  1. Your health check endpoint returns 200 when healthy
  2. RunLater logs the response
  3. Set up a separate webhook to notify you on failures

Example: Multi-Service Check

Create separate requests for each service:

  • api.yourservice.com/health
  • auth.yourservice.com/health
  • cdn.yourservice.com/ping

Best Practices

  • Keep health check endpoints lightweight
  • Use appropriate intervals (not too frequent)
  • Check from multiple regions if critical
  • Review logs regularly for patterns
